Pastor Wayne takes a moment to reflect on this day back in 1944. There is a history lesson as well as a spiritual lesson to be learned by all.

“If someone causes one of these little ones–those who believe in me–to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large milestone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!”  Matthew 18:6-7

“Seven Things That Cause People to Stumble”
I Corinthians 6: 13-20

This morning we continue a 7-part series of sermons on: “How to Make Ethical Decisions in an Unethical World”. When a particular decision is not specifically addressed in God’s Word we would do well to ask one of 7 questions from I Corinthians:
•    Will it benefit me spiritually? (I Corinthians 10:23)
•    Will it put me in bondage? (I Corinthians 6:12)
•    Will it defile God’s temple? (I Corinthians 6: 19-20)
•    Will it cause others to stumble? (I Corinthians 8: 8-9)
•    Will it help the cause of evangelism? (I Corinthians 10: 32-33)

Today, Pastor Wayne speaks of the things he did during the summer as a child. He advises the children of Northminster Church to read their way through summer, and suggests to limit the video games and turn to books on literature, history, biographies, and most of all , the Bible.

Remember and pray for the men and women of our military today and every day.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down on the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

“The Great Cloud of Witnesses”
Hebrews 12: 1-3

On this Memorial Day Sunday, we gather to thank God for our freedoms and for those who sacrificed dearly that we may remain free.  We gather also to recall the “great cloud of witnesses” to whom we are indebted. Hebrews 12: 1-3 gives us insight as to:

1.    Who They Are (vs. 1)

•    The “saints” listed in Hebrews 11
•    A “great company of witnesses” (gk. martyrōn)   *See Hebrews 11: 35-38
•    None were pure nor perfect; all were sinners (Romans 5:8)
•    What did they share?
•    Who else is on the list?
•    Are you on the list (for someone else)?

2.    What They Inspire Us To Do:  (vs. 2-3)

•    “Remove any burden (gk: onkon “weight”)  or sin (gk: hamarian)” that hinders our race (I Cor. 9:24; 2 Tim. 4:7-8)
- What is the difference between “weight” and “sin”?

•    “Run with perseverance (gk: hypomonēs) the race set before us”
What is the importance of endurance?

•    “Keep our eyes on Jesus”
How is Jesus the “author (gk:archēgon) and perfector (gk: teleiōtēn)” of our faith?
(Acts 3:15; Hebrews 2:10)

3.    What Is Our Response?

•    As we contemplate the sacrifices of our military?
•    As we contemplate the great sacrifices of the men and women of faith?
•    As we contemplate our parents and grandparents?

“Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body. (In saying this: Jesus declared all food clean)   He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come–sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.   Mark 7: 18b-23

•    Jesus said: “What comes out of a man makes him unclean”(Mark 7:20-22)
▢Unclean thoughts (adulterous; covetous; envious; angry…)
▢sexual immorality (premarital; extramarital)

3.    How shall we be made clean?
•    “First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.”- Matthew 23: 25-26
•    How are we made clean inside?
•    By Christ alone! (Matthew 22:11-13)
