The Tower Of Babel: Then and Now – Sermon 09-09-2012

Now the whole world had language and a common speech. As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. They said to each other, "Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They use brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth. But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

Genesis 11: 1-6

The Tower of Babel: Then and Now”    Text: Genesis 11: 1-9

Our text this morning concerns the amazing story of the building of the Tower of Babel following the great Flood in Noah’s day (Genesis 6-9).  We examine three aspects of the story:

1.    BABEL THEN
A.    Their Scheme
“ Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to   the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” (11:4)

•    A Tower – i.e. a Religious Goal
•    A Name – i.e a Psychological Goal
B.    Their Sin
“Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” (11:1-4)

2.    THE SPIRIT OF BABEL NOW (TODAY)
“44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies”. (John 8:44)

3.    THE LORD’S RESPONSE”
“8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babec—because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.” (11: 8-9)
